After the Civil War
After the civil war, Dorothea still assisted greatly, with the mentally ill patients in asylums. She visited, to check on their current conditions.
Dorothea moved into the New Jersey State hospital, where they granted her a suite for her needs. She died of a lingering illness on July 17th, 1887.
Her Honors
Dorothea was appointed for many things. She became the President for Life of the Army Nurses Association. There was also a Word War ll ship named after her that served during the 1940s. Along with these honors, The Bangor Mental Health Institute was renamed in August 2006 to Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center.
