Asylums Before Dorothea Dix
Medieval times, degraded those who were mentally ill. These individuals, were isolated and chained to walls in tiny, claustrophobic rooms, just because they didn't comply to societies definition of "socially acceptable." Those who lived in Greece, would ask God to forgive those with illnesses to forgive them of their sins and free the "devil' within. Unfortunately, these acts proceeded until, 1793. Dr. Philippe Pinel, enforced, for the ill to be given, "moral treatment." Patients, were now treated fairly, but more importantly, the release rate dramatically increased.
